Quite Recently, Liverpool owner Mr. John Henry outlined in an interview his plans of moving the club forward and to ultimately start winning titles again. He suggested that he intends to build on the strength of the current squad (not to undermine it). He also went further to comment on the countless speculations being circulated regarding what business the club will or will not do come the start of the upcoming transfer window.
However, and regardless of what Mr. Henry says, there will be assumptions of what Liverpool Football Club needs to do to regain its place amongst the world’s leading football clubs. I like Mr. Henry’s plans and am looking forward to them being realized. What I most certainly like is the fact that he seems to care what supporters think and indeed listens to our views, unlike the previous owners. If indeed he happens to be reading an excerpt from live4liverpool, here is my take on what I think can be done to fix the current squad.
There is absolutely no doubt that we need another striker to partner with Fernando Torres up top. And not just another no name striker, one that has been tried and tested. There has been many names being thrown around recently, including those of Mirko Vucinic , Mario Gomez, Karim Benzema, Oscar Cardozo and Lisandro Lopez. However, of all the names that were mentioned two stand out that would make a quality and suitable partner for our number nine, they are Fernando Llorente and Karim Benzema. Both are really exceptional talents; quick, strong and lethal finishers. Although Llorente of the two is less likely to join the club, I tend to think that he would be more suited to play in the English Premier League.
In addition we need a quality winger and a holding midfielder. A few names have been thrown around for midfielders with attacking minds, including that of Charlie Adam of Blackpool, Chris Brunt of West Bromwich Albion and Man City’s Shaun Wright-Phillips. What we need is a quality winger who can take on and beat opposing players and get crosses in to our strikers. And I think for £5million Shaun Wright-Phillips is man for that job. Although 29 years old, he still has some pace and would do far better than our wingers at present. However, that would just be a quick fix for the January window in an attempt for us to secure a push for a Champions league spot.
Finally, our defence is not what it should be at all. We need suitable, competent centre backs. It is true that Carra is in his twilight years, but apart from himself our defence for the most part has looked totally out of sorts, very slow and unsure. We need rock hard defenders (center backs especially) Ryan Shawcross I think is a good young defender and would be a very good addition. What do you think?
