da mrbet: According to Sky Sports, West Ham United are in talks to sign Cologne striker Anthony Modeste, but they have already had a £22m bid for him rejected with his club valuing him at more than £35m, according to the Daily Telegraph.
What’s the word, then?
da premier bet: Well, Irons manager Slaven Bilic is looking to sign at least two new strikers this summer following continued fitness issues with Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho, which didn’t help the club in a disappointing first season in their London Stadium home.
West Ham were interested in signing Modeste – who has just enjoyed a prolific season in the Bundesliga – in a £6m deal last summer according to Sky Sports, and the Daily Telegraph says they may now have to pay around six times that fee to bring him to the London Stadium this summer after his move to Chinese Super League club Tianjin Quanjian collapsed earlier this week.
How good was Modeste last season?
He was excellent.
The Frenchman scored 27 goals and provided a further three assists in 37 appearances in all competitions for Cologne, with only Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski outscoring him in the Bundesliga.
Would he be a good signing for West Ham?
He certainly could be, yes.
Considering his goalscoring record over the course of the last two seasons especially – as well as his physical nature – he looks ready-made to be a Premier League success.
Much of the Irons’ best attacking play seems to come when they have a big centre-forward in the side, and Modeste is certainly one of those as he stands at 6’2” tall.
But wasn’t he bad at Blackburn?
Modeste joined Rovers on a loan deal for the second-half of the 2011/12 season, but he failed to make much of an impression in struggling side and left Ewood Park having made nine appearances, failing to get on the scoresheet.
Considering he was featuring in a poor Blackburn side and the fact that this was five years ago, it is difficult to judge him on that experience.
Will they pay upwards of £35m for him?
If that is what West Ham want it seems unlikely a deal will be done, and the Irons will hope to negotiate on the price to get the best possible deal.
