Liverpool midfielder Michael Acosta was given his marching orders by referee Sergio Pezzotta 10 minutes after half-time to swing the match firmly in Gremio’s favour and a brace from Vinicius Pacheco powered the hosts to a 3-1 win.
But it was worse news for the other Brazilian side in action on Wednesday, with Ronaldo’s Corinthians eliminated after a 2-0 away loss to Colombian outfit Deportes Tolima.
After a 0-0 stalemate in the first leg, second-half goals to Danny Santoya and Wilder Medina handed Deportes a 2-0 win on the night to progress to round two where they will take on Paraguayan outfit Guarani.
