da bet7k: Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has admitted that he is delighted with his side’s 2-1 win over Sunderland on Sunday, and singled out goalkeeper Wayne Hennessy for particular praise.
The Molineux outfit found themselves a goal down after Kieran Richardson scored early in the second half, but Scotland international striker Steven Fletcher grabbed a brace for the home side to salvage the three points.
The former Republic of Ireland boss could barely contain his happiness after watching his team come back from a goal down.
“It’s a great victory and a great three points. I’m delighted with it,” he raved to Sky Sports.
“It was a great atmosphere today. It was a superb goal they scored but the crowd stuck with us and it was a great team effort.”
The game could have went the other way however, as Black Cats midfielder Sebastian Larsson saw his penalty effort saved by home stopper Hennessy, who McCarthy hailed after the victory.
“Wayne was brilliant. He’s one of the best in the league for me. He’s very young but he’s proved again that he’s an outstanding goalkeeper.
“It’s great for us and the home wins against Wigan and Sunderland are the teams we have to beat.
“We made it difficult for ourselves at times. It was two toiling teams who’ve had it difficult at times. My lads kept on going and that’s how we won the game.
“I don’t know if we were better than Sunderland or they were worse than us. It was two toiling, struggling teams who’ve been having difficult times. But my lads get going and you can see the pleasure it gives people around the place,” he concluded.
The win lifts Wolves up to 14th place, whilst Martin O’Neill has inherited a team low in confidence who are down in 17th, a point above the relegation zone.
Wolves have to travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United next weekend and Sunderland host Blackburn in a relegation six-pointer at the Stadium of Light.
