da 888: England boss Gareth Southgate played down suggestions that Phil Jones is set for another spell on the sidelines following Friday’s goalless draw with Germany.
da dobrowin: The Manchester United defender hobbled off in the 24th minute of the international friendly before pulling up his shorts to reveal heavy strapping on his thigh.
Jones was forced off for his club with a similar injury against Huddersfield Town last month, and it had been suggested that the 25-year-old could now be facing more time on the treatment table.
Southgate, however, has insisted that Jones ‘seems fine’ following the withdrawal, and could yet stay with the squad ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Brazil.
Southgate told reporters:
“He seems fine, we’ve checked him out. It’s something he’s been carrying but he doesn’t seem to be any worse so that’s fine. We’ll see whether Phil stays with us.”
News of Jones’ latest problem will anger United boss Jose Mourinho, who has been without a number of key players over the last few weeks.
The Red Devils will look to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat at Chelsea before the international break when they host Newcastle United next weekend.
