Tottenham Hotspur might have achieved a remarkable feat in reaching the final of the Champions League, however, that has not stopped on football pundit from being extremely critical of them.
Graeme Souness – who else? – slammed Spurs recently by stating in an interview that he did not believe the north London outfit should be in the Madrid showdown against Liverpool – the club he was hugely successful for during the 1980s as captain.
“Spurs shouldn’t be there” was the opening remark he made in an interview via Balls.ie on Twitter leaving almost all of us astounded.
“You say to anyone at the start of the season this team is going to lose 19 games in all competitions and yet they’ll find themselves in the final of the Champions League you’d say you’re talking nonsense. They’ve somehow got there and I think they’re very fortunate to be there.â€
Has he forgotten that Tottenham beat Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Ajax in the knockout stages to just reach the final?! The disrespect in that!
If Souness had not done enough to irritate fans more than he does when doing his TV commitments, he continued to dig himself a hole that many of the Spurs fans will be more than happy to see him never get out of.
“I think another way to look at it, I’m looking at it through the eyes, mostly, through the eyes of a Liverpool supporter, and I’d pose a question” he continued. “If you were picking a team from the 22 players that are going to start the game, how many Spurs players would be in that 11? I’m thinking, as we’re standing here (Christian) Eriksen possibly in midfield, don’t you guys think? And Harry Kane. So you’ve got nine Liverpool players but the minute you try to attach logic to a game of football you’ve come unstuck.” Say it how you mean it, Graeme.
If Tottenham were not already fired up ahead of, arguably, their biggest match in the club’s history then they must be now following these comments.
Souness, you may have done a disservice to your former club as Mauricio Pochettino’s side must surely look to prove you and everyone who shares those ludicrous opinions wrong on Saturday night in European football’s biggest match.
Tottenham fans, what do you make of Souness’ comments? Disrespectful or just bitter towards the club for whatever reason? Let us know your thoughts below!
